Family Cows!

Hattie
Hattie is 3/4 Jersey and 1/4 Holstein, she is three years old.
She is bred to a Jersey bull, and due to calve May, 2008. Her last lactation she gave 7 gallons a day until we grafted a foster calf onto her. She was bottle fed as a calf and thinks of herself as a person! She has a lot of personality and charm.

Elsie
Elsie is a full jersey, though somewhat small either due to her genetics or being weaned too soon, we are not sure which. She is bred to a black Dexter bull for her first calf, due Dec. 2008. We estimate her age to be 18-20 months. She is sweet and getting settled into the routine here. She has horns now, though will be dehorned soon.

The cows and livestock we own are an intergral part of our family farm. We eat what we raise because we are concerned with the poor nutritional value, bland taste and poor quality of most store bought meat (and produce for that matter). Our animals are named, raised humanely and then processed with the least possible amount of trauma and adrenalline-dumping fear.

We do not use hormones, steroids or antibiotics unless necessary to save a life.
We feed a non-medicated alfalfa based grain, in addition to yeast, kelp, molasses and salt/vitamins/minerals.

We strongly suggest each family research for themselves the state of nutrition and the food chain in our country. We also recommend buying locally or producing your own food, even one tomato plant makes a difference. There are informative resources available on our Favorites page. Money talks in America, and if everyone buys bad meat and Twinkies, that is what will be available. Use your dollars to influence the food chain by buying local food, organic food or whole foods.
